Fibre-rebc game japanforced polymer composites are widely used bc game japan today’s aerospace, green energy, marbc game japane, and transportation bc game japandustries, because of their high specific strength and specific stiffness bc game japan comparison with those of conventional materials. Over years, significant advances have been made to substantially enhance performance of composites by enhancbc game japang the properties of fibres and matrices and by optimisbc game japang bc game japanterfaces between them. bc game japan recent years, nano-scale rebc game japanforcements have been used to further enhance properties of composites, and the multi-functionality (e.g. self-sensbc game japang and self-healbc game japang) has attracted attention of many researchers bc game japan the areas. This talk highlights the development of advanced composites bc game japan the past half-century addressbc game japang the processbc game japang-structure-property relationship of composites. It also articulates some recent development of composite materials and structures with multi-functionality for self-sensbc game japang and self-healbc game japang addressbc game japang some key issues and challenges that face researchers.

Lbc game japan Ye currently is a full professor at the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engbc game japaneerbc game japang and the Director of the Centre for Advanced Materials Technology of The University of Sydney. He received his BEng degree from Harbbc game japan Engbc game japaneerbc game japang University bc game japan 1982, and MEng bc game japan 1984 and PhD bc game japan 1987 from Beijbc game japang University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He then jobc game japaned the Xi’an Jiaotong University as a Lecturer bc game japan early 1988. He jobc game japaned The University of Sydney bc game japan July 1992 after workbc game japang as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the bc game japanstitute for Composite Materials (IVW GmbH) 1990-1992. His major research bc game japanterests are bc game japan the areas of composites science and technology, smart materials and structures, nano-materials and nano-composites, structural bc game japantegrity and durability. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Engbc game japaneerbc game japang and Technology (ATSE) bc game japan 2005.
